Fifteen people sustained varying degrees of burn injuries following a gas explosion on Sunday in the Iganmu area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, which occurred at 12 Amosu Street, Ijora Badia, under the Apapa Iganmu LCDA. The explosion involved a 25kg gas cylinder in a mini shop—one of five similar units—within a bungalow that houses 15 self-contained rooms and seven shops.
According to the agency, the fire was triggered by a gas leak caused by the mishandling of gas products. The leak was ignited by a nearby flame, leading to a sudden explosion.
“The fire has been fully extinguished and the remaining gas cylinders evacuated. The area is now safe, and normalcy has been restored,” the agency said in a statement issued Sunday evening.
A total of 15 individuals, including men, women, and children, were injured. Some received first aid at the scene while others were taken to hospital for further treatment. The Fire Service noted that none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
Responders included the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, supported by officials from LASEMA, LNSC, and LASAMBUS.
