President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigerians to 2026, describing the new year as the beginning of a more robust phase of economic growth for the country. In his New Year message, the President expressed gratitude to God and confidence that the reforms of 2025 will yield tangible benefits for all Nigerians.

Tinubu highlighted that 2025 saw steady economic progress, despite global economic challenges. He noted that Nigeria recorded robust GDP growth each quarter, with annualised growth expected to exceed 4 per cent. Inflation declined to below 15 per cent, trade surpluses were maintained, and the Nigerian Stock Exchange posted a 48.12 per cent gain. Foreign reserves stood at $45.4 billion, providing a strong buffer against external shocks, while foreign direct investment rose significantly in the third quarter of 2025.

Fiscal Discipline and Tax Reforms

The President reiterated that fiscal discipline and tax reforms are central to building a sustainable economy. He commended states that adopted harmonised tax laws to reduce excessive taxation and emphasised that the 2026 tax reforms will strengthen revenue generation to fund infrastructure and social investments that deliver shared prosperity.

Security and National Stability

Tinubu also addressed national security, noting ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and banditry, particularly in the Northwest and Northeast. He affirmed that security agencies would deepen cooperation with regional and global partners and called for decentralised policing with accountability to effectively address security challenges.

Inclusive Growth and Social Development

The President outlined plans to accelerate the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, aiming to bring 10 million Nigerians into productive economic activity through empowerment initiatives in agriculture, trade, food processing, and mining. Infrastructure projects across roads, power, ports, railways, airports, pipelines, healthcare, and education will continue uninterrupted.

Call to Unity and Responsibility

President Tinubu urged Nigerians to embrace unity, patriotism, and responsibility in building the nation, stressing that collective effort is essential to achieve the country’s 2026 objectives. He wished all citizens a peaceful, productive, and prosperous New Year, praying for the protection of the nation and the safety of its troops.
