The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River State has arrested 280 drivers over the past five months for allegedly offering bribes to its officers during traffic enforcement operations.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Cross River, Mr. Christopher Ameh, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Calabar. He said the arrests were part of the corps’ ongoing efforts to uphold integrity and discipline among both drivers and officers on duty.

“We have maintained a zero-tolerance policy for bribery. Any motorist caught attempting to compromise our personnel will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly,” Ameh stated.

According to him, the corps has collaborated with mobile courts across the state to ensure prompt trial and punishment of offenders. Earlier in the year, at least 34 motorists were convicted by a mobile court in Calabar for similar offences, including attempted bribery and various traffic violations.

Ameh noted that the FRSC’s intensified enforcement drive has significantly reduced cases of reckless driving, overloading, and seatbelt violations across major routes such as the Calabar–Ikom highway.

He also commended officers who resisted bribery attempts, adding that the corps is committed to recognizing personnel who demonstrate professionalism and integrity in the line of duty.

The Sector Commander urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, emphasizing that bribery undermines public trust and weakens the nation’s collective road safety efforts.

“Offering bribes doesn’t solve problems; it only endangers lives and promotes lawlessness. We appeal to all drivers to cooperate with FRSC officials to make our roads safer,” he said.

The FRSC reiterated its commitment to eradicating corruption in road traffic management through continuous monitoring, digital reporting systems, and collaboration with anti-graft agencies.
