
AEC Unity Network Limited has announced that construction of the proposed 470-kilometre Abuja-Lagos Superhighway is set to begin soon, in what is being billed as one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
Company chairman Dr. Kenny Martins told reporters in Lagos on Tuesday that the $4 billion highway would drastically cut travel time between Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria’s two busiest cities, while offering “a safer, faster, and more reliable alternative to existing road networks.”
According to Martins, the superhighway is designed for vehicles to move at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, a move expected to reduce long road hours for commuters and cargo transporters.
“This is more than just a road. The Abuja-Lagos Superhighway will be a transformational infrastructure project that changes the way people and goods move between the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos,” Martins said.
He added that the project would not only ease travel but also open up rural communities, create thousands of jobs, and unlock new economic opportunities across the nine states along its corridor.
The road will traverse Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, and the FCT, with additional spurs to Ondo State and Baro Port in Niger State, enhancing regional trade and logistics.
Martins emphasized that once completed, the superhighway would help decongest existing transport routes, reduce the cost of goods movement, and ease stress on travelers.
The project, he said, is being developed in partnership with the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), and the Federal Ministry of Works, under the supervision of Works Minister Dave Umahi.
“This road is not just for today but for future generations. By the grace of God, very soon Nigerians will be driving on this superhighway,” he assured.
If completed as planned, the Abuja-Lagos Superhighway could reshape Nigeria’s transport landscape and stand as a landmark in the country’s push for large-scale infrastructure modernization.
