The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious initiative to tackle the nation’s housing deficit, with plans to construct 77,400 social housing units across the country. This initiative, which is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, includes the establishment of new “Renewed Hope Cities” in key urban areas like Lagos, Abuja, and Kano.

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, made this announcement in a recent statement, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with both local and international partners. “The primary mandate of the ministry is to provide mass housing for Nigerians, and we welcome potential collaboration with Ms Allen Le and Partners International Investment Consulting Joint Company in achieving this goal,” Ata remarked.

He further clarified that the government’s commitment to solving the housing crisis would involve substantial investments and partnerships. As part of the initiative, the government will focus on constructing 3,000 housing units each in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano to establish the new cities, while each of the 36 states will receive 250 housing units in the form of estates.

The nationwide social housing rollout is expected to be one of the largest of its kind, with 77,400 units planned—100 in each of the country’s 774 local government areas. Ata confirmed the distribution plan, stating, “Additionally, the social housing initiative will deliver 77,400 housing units, 100 in each of the 774 local government areas.”

A key feature of this initiative is the allocation of a significant proportion of the homes to vulnerable groups. Ata highlighted that 30% of these new units will be allocated to non-income Nigerians, ensuring that a large section of the population benefits from the project. “I commend President Tinubu for maintaining his stance on 30%, even when 20% was initially proposed to him,” Ata added.

The visiting delegation, led by Allen Ke Nam of SV-NED Incorporated, has expressed a strong interest in investing in affordable housing construction. Nam emphasized the socioeconomic benefits of this collaboration, particularly job creation and the introduction of new construction methods. “The collaboration will lead to job creation and skilled acquisition as new construction methods will be introduced in the course of construction,” he noted.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Shuaib Belgore, also extended his support for the initiative, expressing optimism for the potential collaboration and assuring the delegation of the ministry’s full backing.

This landmark project represents a significant step in the Federal Government’s broader efforts to address Nigeria’s housing challenges, create jobs, and provide quality housing to its citizens, particularly those in vulnerable sectors.
