Oven Fire Forces Delta Lagos–Atlanta Flight Diversion

A Delta Air Lines flight from Lagos to Atlanta was forced to make an emergency diversion to Accra, Ghana, after a fire broke out in one of the aircraft’s ovens.

Flight DL055, which departed Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport late Wednesday night, was en route to Atlanta when the incident occurred. According to reports, the fire was swiftly contained by crew members and posed no direct danger to passengers or the aircraft.

However, the diversion and emergency handling extended the crew’s duty time beyond regulatory limits, preventing them from continuing the journey. As a result, passengers were delayed overnight in Accra.

Delta Air Lines confirmed the incident and said alternative travel arrangements were provided. Some passengers were rebooked on Delta’s Accra–New York service, while others were placed on partner airlines including Air France, British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa.

The flight later resumed service from Accra to Atlanta around midday on Thursday, September 25. Delta also cancelled its scheduled inbound Atlanta–Lagos service for the day, offering affected customers hotel accommodations and ground transportation.

The remaining passengers from the diverted flight are expected to depart on Delta’s next scheduled Lagos-bound service on Friday, September 26, at 11:40 a.m.

While investigations into the oven malfunction are ongoing, aviation authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported. Delta apologized for the disruption, emphasizing that the safety of passengers and crew remains its “top priority.”
