Minister of Works, David Umahi, has called on Nigerians, particularly those from the South-East, to support President Bola Tinubu for a second term, stating that the region should wait until after 2031 to contest for the presidency.

In a recent interview in Abuja, Umahi highlighted that before the 2023 elections, the 17 Southern governors agreed in Asaba that the next president should come from the South, regardless of political party. He emphasized that President Tinubu’s emergence was based on this consensus and that he should be allowed to complete an eight-year tenure, which he believes benefits all regions.

Umahi added that after a potential second term ends in 2031, the South-East, having never produced a president, would have a legitimate opportunity to contest.

Addressing concerns about marginalization, Umahi pointed to significant infrastructure projects in the region, including the N350 billion Enugu–Onitsha road project, the N174 billion second access route in Anambra, and the N183 billion dualization of the Enugu–Abakaliki road. He argued these projects demonstrate the administration’s commitment to regional development.

He urged the South-East to support President Tinubu’s re-election, stressing that such backing would strengthen the region’s future prospects for the presidency and called for unity and patience in achieving political goals.
