Manchester United became the target of social media ridicule on Sunday night after former striker Rasmus Hojlund continued his impressive resurgence since leaving Old Trafford. The 22-year-old found the net once again in Denmark’s World Cup qualifier against Greece, extending his fine form that has carried over from his stellar start with Serie A champions Napoli.
Hojlund’s revival comes after a frustrating spell in Manchester, where he managed just 14 goals in 62 Premier League appearances following his 2023 move from Atalanta. Despite insisting earlier in the summer that he wanted to stay and fight for his place under new United manager Ruben Amorim, he ultimately sealed a deadline-day loan move to Napoli, which will become permanent if Antonio Conte’s side secure Champions League qualification.
Since arriving in Italy, Hojlund has looked reborn — scoring four goals in six appearances across all competitions and linking up seamlessly with former United teammate Scott McTominay. His recent international strike for Denmark, his fourth in as many qualifiers, only added fuel to the online banter aimed at United fans, as many lamented the club’s decision to let the young striker flourish elsewhere.
