The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) will now automatically serve as the Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) for individual Nigerians.
Under the policy, registered businesses will use their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number as their Tax ID. The reform, introduced under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, will take effect from January 1, 2026.
FIRS said the move is aimed at simplifying tax identification, improving compliance, and reducing tax evasion. Nigerians who already have a NIN do not need to apply separately for a Tax ID. The agency also clarified that personal bank accounts will not be affected, especially for individuals who do not earn taxable income. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
