No fewer than 469 children lost their lives to malnutrition in Kano State between January and July 2025, while 51.9 per cent of children in the state are affected by stunted growth, new data has revealed.

The figures were disclosed by Professor Ruqayya Aliyu Yusuf of the Department of Information and Media Studies, Bayero University Kano (BUK), during a media sensitisation training where she presented a paper titled “Understanding the Basics of Behavioural Change: Towards Improving Malnutrition in Kano State.”

According to Yusuf, malnutrition and unhealthy feeding practices continue to pose the most serious nutrition-related challenges in Kano State, despite Nigeria’s high ranking on the Global Nutrition Index.

She cited 2025 reports by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which indicate that about 40 per cent of children under the age of five nationwide are stunted, while the situation is more severe in Kano, where nearly 52 per cent of children suffer impaired growth due to chronic malnutrition.

The academic stressed that addressing behavioural patterns around nutrition, infant feeding and household food choices remains critical to reversing the alarming trends and reducing preventable child deaths in the state.
