The Federal Government has cleared more than 500 Nigerians in South Africa for evacuation as it continues efforts to facilitate the safe return of citizens willing to come back home.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that the screening exercise for Nigerians registered for evacuation has been extended to ensure that all eligible individuals are properly verified and documented before repatriation.
According to officials overseeing the process, the extension became necessary following a high volume of applicants and the need to carefully validate identities and travel documents to avoid complications during evacuation.
The screening is being jointly conducted by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria in collaboration with relevant South African authorities, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to manage the exercise smoothly.
Authorities explained that the evacuation process is part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad, especially those facing challenges that make voluntary return necessary.
Officials further assured that all cleared persons will be evacuated in phases, in line with logistical arrangements and available resources, while those still under screening will be attended to in due course.
The government urged Nigerians in South Africa involved in the exercise to remain patient and comply with official procedures as the process continues.
