The Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has commenced the rollout of Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) equipment and related medical supplies aimed at reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths across Nigeria.
The intervention was flagged off at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, under the Health Sector Renewal Programme, through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII), the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp), and the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII).
Speaking at the ceremony, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said the initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that women and newborns have access to timely, quality, and life-saving healthcare services regardless of location.
He noted that ongoing reforms and investments in primary healthcare, emergency referral systems, essential medicines, and workforce strengthening have expanded access to services, with millions of Nigerians now benefiting from improved healthcare delivery nationwide.
Under the programme, 15 local government areas in Bauchi State will benefit from the intervention, which includes the deployment of modern obstetric equipment, essential medicines, over 17,000 maternity delivery kits, 15 tricycle ambulances, and six fully equipped ambulances.
The initiative is designed to strengthen emergency obstetric care, improve management of pregnancy-related complications, and enhance survival outcomes for mothers and newborns across the state.
Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, commended the Federal Government for the intervention and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sustained collaboration in improving maternal and child healthcare.
Also speaking, the National Coordinator of the Sector-Wide Approach, Dr. Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq, described the rollout as a demonstration of coordinated federal and state collaboration under the national health reform agenda, aimed at improving service delivery and health outcomes.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining investments and partnerships that strengthen Nigeria’s health system and advance progress toward universal health coverage.
