On Sunday, House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh allegedly assaulted an e-hailing driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, who had come to deliver a package to him. The incident, recorded in a viral video, took place at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja.
In the footage, the visibly angry representative for Aba North & South Federal Constituency (APGA) can be seen repeatedly slapping and berating the driver after he asked Ikwechegh to come outside to receive the delivery of snails. Ikwechegh claimed the driver’s request was disrespectful, given his status, and made threats, stating he could make the driver “disappear” without repercussions.
“Do you know who I am? I can make you disappear in Nigeria, and nothing will happen. Can you imagine this rat? I won’t give you a naira of my money,” he said. He further threatened, “I won’t call my police to beat you up; I’ll do it myself. I’ll show you who I am.”
When the driver asked for his delivery fee, Ikwechegh slapped him multiple times, demanding to know if he recognized who he was speaking to. “I just slapped you, and there’s nothing you can do about it. My name is Honourable Alex Ikwechegh—tell them I slapped you. Call the Inspector General of Police; let him come. Record me well,” he boasted.
In September 2023, Ikwechegh was declared the winner of a disputed election after the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Umuahia, Abia State, ruled against Labour Party member Emeka Nnamani for certificate forgery. The tribunal ordered that a certificate of return be issued to Ikwechegh, who came in second during the 2023 general elections.
Nnamani had previously faced scrutiny over his party registration and was accused of certificate forgery related to his claims of graduating from the University of Port Harcourt. Although Nnamani has denied the allegations and described the reports of a 10-year election ban as “lies from the pit of hell,” he acknowledged that issues with the university’s records contributed to the controversy surrounding his candidacy.
