Traffic in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) worsened on Sunday as combined security forces from the Guards Brigade and the FCT Command of the Nigerian Police mounted additional roadblocks at key entry points into the nation’s capital. The move, reported by Daily Trust, is linked to ongoing protests led by the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore.
Motorists experienced heavy gridlocks around Bwari, Zuba, Nyanya, and other major entry points. Roads connecting Bwari to the city centre were blocked at the War College area in Ushafa and the Dutse-Sokale area, leaving many workers stranded.
Earlier, security operatives had only blocked strategic locations near the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, Court of Appeal Headquarters, Force Headquarters, and Eagle Square.
A security source told Daily Trust that extending the roadblocks to outskirts of the FCT was necessary to prevent “external aggressors” from entering the capital. The source said motorists entering the city centre are being thoroughly screened to separate potential troublemakers from law-abiding citizens.
Another officer disclosed that intelligence reports indicated protesters were restrategising and might mobilise more street actors to disrupt the city.
Civil servant Isaac Babalola told Daily Trust that he had to return home due to the traffic jam at the War College Camp in Ushafa, confirming that vehicle checks were causing significant delays. Motorists along the Mararaba-Nyanya axis also expressed frustration, saying the congestion was unplanned and severely disrupted their travel.
The development comes amid heightened security concerns following reports of an alleged coup plot against the government of President Bola Tinubu.
