Croatia captain Luka Modric has signed a one-year contract with AC Milan at the age of 39, the Italian club confirmed on Monday.

Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri had previously hinted that the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner would join the club following the Club World Cup, marking the end of his illustrious spell with Real Madrid. Modric, who will turn 40 in September, had been at Madrid since his move from Tottenham in 2012 and was linked with a switch to Serie A as early as June after announcing his departure from the Spanish side.

“AC Milan are pleased to announce the signing of Luka Modric on a deal running until 30 June 2026, with an option to extend until 30 June 2027,” the 19-time Serie A champions said in a statement.

Modric completed his medical in Milan on Monday and is expected to begin training with the squad in August, according to reports in Italy.

“I’m thrilled to be here and excited to begin this new chapter in my career,” Modric said in a message shared on the club’s social media. “Sending a big hug to everyone.”

Allegri, who led Milan to the Serie A title in 2011 during his first stint from 2010 to 2014, has returned to guide the Rossoneri once again.
