In a move to enhance youth empowerment, gender inclusion, and grassroots sports development, global sportswear leader adidas, in collaboration with its Nigerian franchise partner LATC, has donated 200 footballs to 20 schools across Lagos State. This initiative, which partners with the Lagos State Sports Commission, aims to create equal opportunities in school sports for both boys and girls.

The donation ensures a balanced distribution of the footballs between boys’ and girls’ teams, underscoring adidas’ commitment to fostering gender equality within school sports. This initiative comes as part of adidas’ wider goal of promoting inclusivity in sports, where every child has the chance to engage in physical activities, regardless of gender.

A Symbolic Gesture for Grassroots Sports

During a visit to Lagos State, Dave Thomas, CEO of adidas Global Emerging Markets, presented a symbolic football to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, marking the partnership’s dedication to supporting government-led youth and sports initiatives in Nigeria.

“Sport has the power to shape the future,” said an adidas spokesperson. “This donation is more than just equipment; it is an investment in the dreams, health, and leadership potential of young boys and girls across Lagos. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to play, grow, and thrive.”

The effort was well received by local leaders and sports enthusiasts, with the Lagos State Sports Commission praising the donation as a significant boost to grassroots sports and gender equity in school sports programs.

LATC’s Vision for Holistic Student Development

LATC also highlighted that the donation aligns with its broader mission of developing well-rounded students. “School sports is a powerful tool for a complete education,” said Kingsley Oko, Chief Strategy Officer at LATC. “This donation supports children not only to become better athletes but more confident, healthier, and focused individuals.”

Adidas and LATC’s Commitment to Youth Development

This initiative also reflects adidas’ global mission of “changing lives through sport” and LATC’s ongoing efforts to support youth development across Nigeria. As the importance of inclusive physical education becomes increasingly recognised as a critical element of national development, initiatives like this help drive positive change in communities across the country.

By working hand-in-hand with local authorities and educational institutions, adidas and LATC are making lasting impacts on the future of youth sports in Nigeria, ensuring that young athletes have the resources, support, and opportunities to thrive.
