African airlines recorded the fastest growth in global air cargo demand in November 2025, outperforming all other regions, according to the latest data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The report shows that air cargo demand for African carriers rose by 15.6% year-on-year, nearly three times the global average growth of 5.5% recorded during the month. The strong performance highlights Africa’s growing role in global trade and the increasing reliance on air freight for time-sensitive goods.
In addition to rising demand, African airlines also expanded capacity significantly. Available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs) increased by 18.1% compared with November 2024, the highest capacity growth among all regions. IATA noted that the expansion helped support rising trade volumes and improved connectivity between African markets and the rest of the world.
Globally, air cargo demand maintained positive momentum in November, supported by peak-season shipping, resilient e-commerce activity, and adjustments in supply chains. International cargo demand remained the main driver of growth, even as regional performances varied widely.
Elsewhere, Asia-Pacific carriers posted strong double-digit growth, while European and Middle Eastern airlines recorded moderate increases in cargo volumes. In contrast, North American carriers experienced a slight decline, reflecting softer trade conditions, while Latin America and the Caribbean reported weaker overall performance.
IATA said the divergence in regional results underscores shifting trade patterns and the growing importance of emerging markets. Industry analysts believe Africa’s strong showing signals increasing investment in air cargo infrastructure and a broader integration of the continent into global supply chains.
With air cargo demand closing 2025 on a solid note, IATA remains cautiously optimistic about the sector’s outlook in 2026, despite ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainties. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
