Following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for decisive and immediate security action in Benue State, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has advocated for community-led self protection mechanisms as a key strategy to end the persistent killings in the state.
During a visit to Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, scene of a recent massacre that claimed at least 59 lives, General Musa was accompanied by Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun. He stressed the need for proactive collaboration between communities and security forces. “We must work together as a team… This madness must stop and it will end,” he declared.
Musa revealed that the military’s role is transitioning from peacekeeping to active offensive operations in the affected areas in strict compliance with President Tinubu’s instructions. This marks a significant shift in the government’s security approach to restore peace and ensure justice for victims of violence.
President Tinubu’s renewed focus on security and his anticipated visit to Benue demonstrate his administration’s strong commitment to safeguarding lives and securing communities through grassroots engagement, intelligence gathering, and strengthened military presence.
