For the second time in less than a month, a severe rainstorm has struck the Federal Polytechnic, Idah in Kogi State, causing extensive damage to the institution’s infrastructure and further disrupting academic and administrative activities.

The first rainstorm hit on June 15, significantly affecting operations. This recent downpour, according to reports, has deepened the institution’s challenges, damaging additional lecture halls, student hostels, and other vital facilities.

The management of the institution expressed concern that the recurring weather-related damage is threatening to bring academic activities to a complete halt.

Chairman of the Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Adetope Ademiluyi, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating:

“On the 15th June, 2025, a severe rainstorm hit the Federal Polytechnic Idah; one of such recently. The rainstorm caused significant damage to our buildings, including lecture halls, laboratories and hostels. This affected the morale of our staff and students.”

He appealed to the federal and state governments, corporate bodies, and the general public for urgent support:

“Given the severity of the situation, we solicit for the support and assistance of the government, corporate organizations and public to rebuild and restore our institution. We urge the relevant authorities to provide us with the necessary resources to address the immediate needs of our students and staff,” said Ademiluyi.

He reiterated that as the premier federal institution of higher learning in Kogi State, the school remains committed to providing quality education—but requires urgent intervention to do so in the face of ongoing devastation.

Meanwhile, students of the institution lamented the situation, urging authorities to intervene quickly to prevent a total collapse of academic operations.

Hadizat Zubair, a student, described the impact on learning:

“The academic activities have been disrupted greatly by the persisting rainstorm on the facilities of the institution. For the sake of the future of the embattled students of the institution, we appealed for help from all and sundry, in the attempt of the management of the institution to rebuild the destroyed facilities for smooth academic activities.”

This latest incident adds to a growing list of weather-related disasters in Kogi State and surrounding regions, where floods and rainstorms have displaced residents and damaged thousands of homes in recent weeks.
