The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to take immediate action to cushion farmers from the sharp decline in farm-gate prices of agricultural produce, warning that failure to intervene could threaten livelihoods and worsen food security.

The motion, sponsored by Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central), highlighted the widening gap between falling produce prices and the rising cost of farm inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides. Lawmakers stressed that while recent measures to reduce food prices have benefited consumers, they have inadvertently put local farmers under financial strain.

The Senate called for a special emergency intervention package for affected farmers and recommended broad-based subsidies on agricultural inputs to make farming economically viable.
