Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar remains part of his plans for the 2026 World Cup, but warned the forward that only full fitness will guarantee him a place in the final squad. The 33-year-old has not featured for the Seleção since October 2023, when Brazil lost 2–0 to Uruguay, but Ancelotti insists the Santos star could still play a key role in his World Cup project — if he can stay injury-free.
Neymar, who boasts 128 international caps, has endured a difficult period since leaving Paris Saint-Germain, suffering a cruciate ligament tear during his stint with Al Hilal in the 2023/24 season before battling recurring hamstring issues. Despite those setbacks, he made a sentimental return to Santos earlier this year, aiming to rebuild form and fitness. “Neymar can play at his highest level in this team without any problems,” Ancelotti said. “When he is in good physical condition, he has the quality to play not only in Brazil but in any team in the world because of his talent.”
The Italian tactician, who became the first foreign-born coach to lead Brazil, said his focus is on restoring the national team’s trademark flair while maintaining tactical discipline. “Brazilian players have individual quality, but that must be combined with teamwork and movement off the ball,” Ancelotti explained. “My goal is to help this team reach its best level and win the World Cup. No foreign coach has ever done it before — but there is always a first time.”
