Arsenal have completed the signing of Canadian forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool for a reported world-record women’s transfer fee of £1 million ($1.3 million).

The 20-year-old has signed a lucrative four-year deal with the Women’s Champions League holders, becoming the most expensive player in women’s football history. The fee eclipses the previous record of £900,000, paid by Chelsea for Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave earlier this year.

“This is a dream come true,” Smith said. “I want to compete for the biggest trophies in England and Europe, and I’m thrilled to begin that journey with Arsenal.”

Smith joined Liverpool from Portuguese side Sporting in 2024 for £200,000 and made an immediate impact, netting seven goals in 20 Women’s Super League appearances. Her standout performances sparked interest from multiple clubs, but Liverpool held firm until Arsenal tabled the record-breaking offer.

Smith, who made her senior international debut for Canada at just 15 in 2019, is regarded as one of the most promising young forwards in the women’s game.

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers praised the new signing, saying:

“Olivia is a hugely exciting talent. She’s already shown maturity and quality in two top European leagues, and we believe she can make a big impact here. Her mentality and character are exactly what we look for at Arsenal.”

Smith’s arrival underlines Arsenal’s ambition as they continue to build a squad capable of dominating both domestically and in Europe.
