The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, which began on October 13, 2025. The decision was announced by ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, following an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) that concluded early Wednesday morning in Abuja.
The strike was initially called to press the Federal Government on longstanding demands, including the implementation of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, the release of withheld salaries, and the provision of sustainable funding for public universities. The suspension of the strike is intended to allow further dialogue and negotiations between the union and the government.
ASUU has, however, issued a one-month ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning that failure to meet its demands within this period may trigger the resumption of industrial action. The union emphasized its commitment to protecting the welfare of academic staff and ensuring quality education in Nigeria’s universities.
Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the suspension, noting that it provides a temporary reprieve for students and staff while encouraging constructive engagement between the government and the union to resolve ongoing disputes.
