Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, dismissing reports that he may pull out of the race.
Atiku, in a telephone conversation with his former media aide, Professor Tunde Olusunle, said he never authorised statements suggesting he was no longer interested in the presidency. He clarified that remarks made by Professor Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, during a political defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos, did not reflect his position.
“I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned. The level of poverty, pain, and deceit in the system is unacceptable. I will be offering myself to lead the reclamation and reconstruction of our traumatised homeland,” Atiku was quoted as saying.
The former Vice President also stressed that the ADC coalition he is working with will galvanise popular support for victory in 2027. He dismissed concerns about the party’s performance in recent bye-elections, saying it is a young platform that will soon surprise critics.
“ADC is leading a potent mass movement which will shock the world. We will upstage the status quo in a way that will leave doubters dumbstruck,” Atiku declared.
