AU Rejects Parallel Governments in Sudan, Calls for Ceasefire

The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) has strongly opposed the establishment of a parallel government in Sudan by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), warning that such actions threaten the nation’s unity and risk its fragmentation.

Reaffirming Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the AU urged member states and the international community to reject any attempts to create an alternative administration.

In a statement released yesterday following its 1,264th meeting on March 11, 2025, in Addis Ababa, the council cautioned against providing support or recognition to political or armed factions attempting to establish a separate governing entity.

AU Condemns Sudan Conflict, Calls for Ramadan Ceasefire

The AU’s stance comes as the humanitarian crisis in Sudan worsens, with over 12 million people displaced—what the PSC has described as the world’s largest humanitarian emergency.

The organization firmly stated that it would not recognize any purported parallel government or governing entity within Sudan. It also urged all parties to agree to a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan and allow unrestricted humanitarian aid to reach affected populations.

The statement read in part: “Council expressed its grave concern and outright condemnation of the recent developments in Sudan, in particular the announcement by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its affiliated political and social forces of the establishment of a parallel government in the Republic of Sudan, and warned that such action carries a huge risk of partitioning of the country.”

Sudan’s Government Welcomes AU’s Support

Reacting to the AU’s position, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended the courage of AU member states for taking a firm stand. The ministry emphasized that this move would bolster unity and partnership among African nations in alignment with the core charters and principles of the AU.
