Nigeria’s auto industry is applauding the Senate for moving forward with the Electric Vehicle Transition and Green Mobility Bill, 2025, which has now passed its second reading.

Sponsored by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the bill aims to fast-track Nigeria’s shift to electric mobility by encouraging local EV production, building charging infrastructure, and offering tax incentives to manufacturers and consumers.

KIA Motors Nigeria, Cedric Masters Group, Jet Motor Company, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, and the NADDC have all endorsed the bill. They say it will boost local manufacturing, create jobs, reduce reliance on imported vehicles, and position Nigeria as a regional EV hub.

Key provisions include mandatory charging stations at fuel stations, tax holidays for EV investors, local assembly requirements for foreign brands, and a 30% local-content target by 2030.

While automakers welcomed the initiative, they also warned that stable electricity supply and accessible financing remain essential for EV adoption to grow.

The bill now moves to the next legislative stage. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
