Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has admitted she fears her new social media challenge for Hot Body could trigger conspiracy theories about her. Taking to her X handle, the Mavin star joked but also cautioned, “I better not get any mami water allegation because of this hot body video,” referring to the popular West African myth often tied to accusations of witchcraft or marine spirits.
Hot Body marks Ayra Starr’s first single since signing with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. To promote the track, she and her team created a trend where young women dance and flaunt their “hot bodies” to the song. While the trend has gained traction online, it has also sparked criticism, with fellow artist Jaywon questioning her fashion choices and accusing her of promoting nudity.
Ayra Starr’s concerns echo controversies that surrounded her labelmate Rema in 2023, when he was accused of displaying “satanic” and “Illuminati” symbols during his O2 Arena concert in London. Rema later clarified that his stage props and outfits were cultural references to Benin art and the famous Queen Idia mask, and in a 2025 Rolling Stone interview, firmly denied claims of devil worship. Ayra Starr now appears wary of facing similar unfounded allegations as her global career continues to rise.
