The 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony is set for September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, and for the first time in the award’s history, the number of accolades for male and female players will be equal, organisers announced on Monday.

New categories have been introduced for women, including Best Goalkeeper, Best Young Player, and Top Scorer for club or national teams. This brings the total to six awards each for men and women.

Additionally, the Socrates Award—honouring players, male or female, for contributions to social and humanitarian causes—will continue to be presented.

Nominees across all categories will be revealed in early August.

Last year’s event was marred by Real Madrid’s boycott after Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior missed out on the Best Men’s Player title, which was awarded to Manchester City’s Rodri.
