Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will undergo surgery for a ruptured knee tendon, the club announced on Monday. The 32-year-old German international could potentially be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Ter Stegen was stretchered off during Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Villarreal on Sunday after landing awkwardly.
“(Ter Stegen) has a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee,” stated the club.
He is scheduled for surgery on Monday afternoon, after which the club will provide further updates.
Ter Stegen faced criticism following a mistake in Barcelona’s 2-1 Champions League defeat at Monaco last Thursday. His injury occurred just before half-time during the match against Villarreal at Estadio de la Ceramica.
“It looks like a serious injury; you could tell right away when he was on the ground,” said Barcelona coach Hansi Flick after the game.
Inaki Pena replaced Ter Stegen and is expected to step in for the German, although Barcelona may seek to sign a new goalkeeper.
Flick noted that it was too early to discuss potential replacements, stating, “I’d prefer not to address that right now. My priority is to check on Marc; he’s our captain and a crucial player for us.”
Ter Stegen had recently started two Nations League matches for Germany following Manuel Neuer’s retirement from international duty in August.
