A 12-member delegation from the Autonomous National Electoral Commission of Benin Republic (CENA) is currently in Nigeria to learn from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as part of preparations for the Republic of Benin’s 2026 general elections.
Receiving the delegation, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, explained that INEC had received a letter from CENA last month, expressing interest in a study visit to Nigeria as they prepare for their most complex elections yet in 2026.
Prof. Yakubu welcomed Dr. Sacca Lafia, President of CENA, and the delegation to INEC’s headquarters in Abuja. He highlighted that, for the first time, CENA will conduct three elections within three months: legislative and local elections in January 2026, followed by the presidential election in April 2026. As a result, the delegation, which includes National Commissioners, Directors, and other key staff, is visiting INEC to study Nigeria’s electoral processes.
Yakubu noted that CENA is particularly interested in Nigeria’s legal framework for elections, the design and printing of election materials, recruitment and training of polling officials, election budgeting, payment processes, security during elections, the use of technology, and engagement with electoral stakeholders.
In response, Yakubu assured the delegation that INEC has prepared a detailed program to share its experiences, with various departments briefing the visitors on all aspects of the electoral process. He emphasized that the exchange of knowledge would help strengthen CENA’s own processes.
