President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that the United States would engage with “all Syrian groups” to facilitate a political transition following the dramatic fall of President Bashar al-Assad. Speaking from the White House, Biden emphasized the importance of transitioning Syria into an independent, sovereign state under a new constitution.

“We will engage with all Syrian groups, including within the process led by the United Nations, to establish a transition away from the Assad regime,” Biden said. “This is a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria.”

The fall of the Assad regime marks the end of more than five decades of family rule. Assad, who reportedly fled to Moscow, has been deposed following a swift rebel offensive led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The lightning campaign shattered years of stagnant frontlines in Syria’s prolonged civil war, culminating in HTS forces entering Damascus early Sunday. Assad’s luxurious home in the capital was reportedly ransacked as celebrations erupted across the country.

Biden stressed that Assad should be held accountable for his actions during his rule. “Assad should be held accountable,” he told reporters, calling the regime’s collapse “a fundamental act of justice.”

The president’s remarks underscore the U.S. commitment to supporting Syria’s path to a new future. Biden noted that Washington would work closely with the United Nations and Syrian factions to ensure a stable political transition, rebuild institutions, and draft a new constitution.

The rapid fall of the Assad regime has triggered international attention, with analysts calling it a turning point in the country’s tumultuous history. Biden’s administration has pledged to aid Syria during this transitional period, aiming to bring lasting peace to a nation ravaged by over a decade of civil war.
