In a poignant farewell address to the United Nations on Tuesday, President Joe Biden reflected on his decision to withdraw from the upcoming U.S. presidential election, emphasizing the importance of democratic values in the face of rising global autocracy.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Biden, 81, received applause as he declared, “My fellow leaders, let us never forget, some things are more important than staying in power.” His address served as both a personal reflection and a rallying call for world leaders to defend democratic principles amid increasing chaos and conflict worldwide.

During his speech, Biden highlighted the need for continued support for Ukraine in its fight against aggression and advocated for peace initiatives in the Middle East. He stressed that the challenges faced by democracies require unwavering commitment from their leaders.

With just six weeks remaining until the U.S. presidential election, which could potentially see the return of the isolationist and election-denying Donald Trump, Biden shared insights drawn from his own political journey. “This summer, I faced a decision whether to seek a second term as president. It was a difficult decision. Being president has been the honor of my life; there’s so much more I want to get done,” he said.

He continued, “As much as I love the job, I love my country more. I decided after 50 years of public service it’s time for a new generation of leadership to take my nation forward. It’s your people that matter the most.”

Biden’s address resonated with a sense of urgency as he called on leaders to reject autocratic tendencies and work collaboratively for the common good. His words underscored the significance of generational change in leadership, urging the global community to prioritize democratic ideals in their governance.

As the international stage watches closely, Biden’s farewell speech encapsulated a critical moment not only for the United States but for democracies worldwide, reminding leaders of their responsibility to uphold the values that bind their nations together.
