Brazil’s government has officially announced Nigeria’s inclusion as a partner country in the multinational BRICS bloc, a significant step that underscores the African nation’s growing influence on the global stage.
The announcement, made on Friday, comes as Brazil prepares to assume the bloc’s presidency in 2025. Itamaraty, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, highlighted Nigeria’s active role in fostering international cooperation, stating that the country has been “strengthening cooperation in the Global South and reforming global governance.” This aligns closely with Brazil’s own foreign policy priorities.
In its statement, Itamaraty emphasized Nigeria’s global significance:
“As the 6th largest population in the world and the 1st on the African continent, as well as one of the largest economies in Africa, Nigeria has converging interests with the other members of the group.”
With this inclusion, Nigeria joins eight other BRICS partner nations, which are primarily located in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia.
The move further cements BRICS’ efforts to expand its influence and cooperation across the Global South, positioning Nigeria as a vital player in shaping the bloc’s future initiatives.
