The Kogi State government has once again appealed to the Federal Government and international donor agencies for assistance as floods devastate over 200 communities and leave around two million people homeless.
During a press conference in Kotonkarfe, Kogi Local Government Area, on Monday, the State’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, warned that a major humanitarian crisis is unfolding, with nearly two million people displaced.
He emphasized that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) cannot afford to delay any longer, as the situation has become overwhelming.
“We are facing a dire emergency, and the impact of the floods is devastating. Over 200 communities have been submerged, and close to two million people are now homeless,” Fanwo stated.
Currently, nine out of the state’s 21 Local Government Areas are affected, nearly half of the total. While approximately 68 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps have been established, they cannot accommodate the large population in need. Additionally, essential infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, has been completely destroyed.
“It is heartbreaking to see the elderly and young children in such distress. Fortunately, we did not lose any lives because we activated our early warning and awareness programs. However, we are expending substantial resources daily, which remain insufficient. We urgently call on the Federal Government, international donor agencies, NGOs, and philanthropists to assist us,” he said.
Fanwo also noted that the State Government has formed a Flood Disaster Response Team, led by the Deputy Governor, to support victims in the wake of this natural disaster. Affected local government areas include Kogi, Lokoja, Adavi, Ofu, Ajaokuta, Idah, and Ibaji.
