A powerful explosion rocked the city of Jos on Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves through nearby neighborhoods.
Eyewitnesses reported that the blast occurred around 10:30 a.m. near the bustling Terminus Market, a densely populated area in the heart of the city.
Initial reports indicate that several people were injured, and some sources suggest there may have been fatalities. The full extent of the damage is still unclear, but witnesses described scenes of panic and devastation.
“I was close by when I heard a loud bang,” said Gyang Buba, a clothes vendor at the market. “People were running, screaming—it was terrifying.”
Emergency services, including police, fire crews, and ambulance teams, quickly responded to the scene to provide assistance.
As of now, the Plateau State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts to reach the Command’s spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as his phone was off. However, security sources at the Jos police headquarters have confirmed the explosion, stating that an investigation is underway.
“The area has been cordoned off as investigators assess the situation. We are working to determine the cause of the explosion,” a security source said. “We urge the public to remain calm and assure them that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure their safety.”
The blast has raised heightened security concerns in Jos, a city that has faced periodic violence and unrest in recent years. Residents are calling for increased security measures in the wake of the explosion.
More details will follow as the investigation unfolds.
