In a startling judicial move, Justice Adefunmilola Demi-Ajayi of the Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, has directed the arrest and imprisonment of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for defying a prior court judgment. The bench ordered that the Inspector General of Police ensure his arrest within seven days, citing contempt of court.
The judgment stems from Suit No. FHC/OS/CS/194/2024, brought by the Action Alliance party, which accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Yakubu of failing to reinstate a National Executive Committee it had removed from INEC’s portal. The court had previously ordered the names be restored online, but found the defendants in default.
Yakubu, who recently completed his term as INEC Chairman, is now engulfed in legal fire as he steps down. While some reports suggest partial compliance attempts, the court’s order remains firm: full adherence or face incarceration for contempt.
