BREAKING: Nationwide Blackout Looms as Electricity Workers Begin Strike

Share

Nigeria faces the threat of a nationwide blackout as the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Wednesday launched an indefinite strike over unresolved labour disputes with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The industrial action, which commenced earlier today, has already begun disrupting power supply in parts of the country, raising fears of a total grid collapse if talks fail.

The union accuses TCN of failing to address long-standing issues relating to worker welfare, stalled promotions, and alleged unfair labour practices. Despite several rounds of negotiations, both sides have yet to reach an agreement, forcing NUEE to make good on its threat to withdraw services.

With electricity workers at transmission stations and other critical installations walking off the job, the strike has sparked concerns across industries, businesses, and households already grappling with irregular power supply. The federal government is yet to issue a formal response, but urgent intervention may be needed to avert a prolonged blackout.
