The aircraft carrying the Super Eagles and their officials landed in Kano on Monday evening after returning from Libya.
The Super Eagles withdrew from a scheduled qualifier match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against the Libyan national team due to alleged mistreatment at a makeshift airport in Libya.
The Nigerian delegation experienced several hours of being stranded at the Libyan facility from Sunday to early Monday.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially responded to the situation, announcing in a statement that the matter has been referred to its Disciplinary Board for investigation. They are looking into the delays faced by the Super Eagles at the Libyan airport.
CAF also assured that appropriate actions will be taken against any violations of its statutes and regulations once the investigation is complete.
In a statement on their website on October 14, 2024, CAF said, “The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after learning that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) and their technical team were stranded in unacceptable conditions for several hours at an airport they were allegedly directed to by Libyan authorities.”
The Nigerian delegation had arrived at a makeshift airport in Libya on Sunday evening and spent numerous hours at Al Abraq Airport before deciding to boycott the scheduled AFCON qualifier.
The Super Eagles players and officials are now on their way back to Nigeria.
