According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, the holiday is meant to allow Nigerians to reflect on the life, leadership, and service of the former President, who passed away recently in London after a prolonged illness.
The government has also urged citizens to use the day to pray for the repose of his soul and to remember his contributions to national unity, security, and anti-corruption efforts during his time in office.
Further details regarding national prayers and official ceremonies are expected to be released in due course.
