The United States has ordered its withdrawal from 66 international and United Nations-affiliated organisations following a new directive signed by President Donald Trump on January 7, 2026.
The directive, contained in a Presidential Memorandum titled “Memorandum for the Heads of Executive Departments and Agencies,” instructs all relevant U.S. agencies to end participation and funding for organisations deemed “contrary to the interests of the United States.”
According to the memorandum, President Trump determined that continued U.S. membership, involvement, or financial support for the affected bodies no longer serves America’s national interest.
The decision followed a formal review conducted in consultation with the Secretary of State, the U.S. Representative to the United Nations, and members of the President’s Cabinet.
While the full list of the affected organisations has not yet been made public, the move signals a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy and multilateral engagement under the Trump administration.
