Vince Zampella, the renowned video game developer and co-creator of the blockbuster Call of Duty franchise, has died following a fatal car accident in California. Electronic Arts confirmed his death on Monday. He was 55.
According to reports by local broadcaster NBC4, the veteran gaming executive was killed on Sunday while driving his Ferrari along a scenic roadway north of Los Angeles. Authorities said the luxury vehicle suddenly left the road, slammed into a concrete barrier and burst into flames.
In a statement, the California Highway Patrol disclosed that both the driver and a passenger, who was reportedly thrown from the vehicle, died from injuries sustained in the crash. The identities of the victims were not immediately released, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Videos shared by eyewitnesses on social media showed the wreckage of the cherry-red Ferrari completely engulfed in flames on the mountainous stretch of road.
Zampella was widely regarded as a pioneer in the first-person military shooter genre. Through his studios, he helped create some of the most commercially successful video games in history, reshaping modern gaming culture.
Earlier this year, following record-breaking sales of Battlefield 6, Zampella reflected on his career with gratitude, noting that moments of success were never taken for granted despite decades of achievement. The Battlefield franchise has attracted over 100 million players worldwide across its various editions.
However, that milestone was matched — and arguably surpassed — by Call of Duty, which continues to record more than 100 million active monthly players globally, cementing Zampella’s legacy as one of the most influential figures in the gaming industry.
