CBN Orders Geo-Tagging of PoS Devices Nationwide

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a new directive mandating the geo-tagging of all Point-of-Sale (PoS) devices across the country.

In a circular released on August 25, 2025, the apex bank ordered licensed operators—including Moniepoint, OPay, PalmPay, banks, and other service providers—to register every PoS terminal with exact GPS coordinates within 60 days. Devices used outside a merchant’s registered address will be shut down.

The CBN says the move is aimed at curbing fraud, ending the use of cloned or “ghost” terminals, and ensuring real-time tracking of transactions in Nigeria’s booming PoS industry, which currently has over 4 million active terminals nationwide. Compliance checks will begin on October 20, 2025.
