Celine Dion criticized Donald Trump on Saturday for using her iconic song from the movie “Titanic” during a rally. The Republican presidential candidate played Dion’s 1997 hit, “My Heart Will Go On,” at an event in Montana on Friday, with a video of Dion performing the song projected on a large screen.
Dion’s management team and her record label, Sony Music Entertainment Canada, issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) clarifying that the use of the song and video was “in no way” authorized. They emphasized that Dion does not endorse this or any similar use, adding with a hint of irony, “And really, THAT song?”
Social media users have drawn parallels between Trump’s campaign and the ill-fated ship from the James Cameron film, implying that the choice of song was less than ideal.
Trump has faced challenges in the election race, particularly since Kamala Harris replaced Joe Biden as the Democratic candidate. Harris has gained significant momentum since stepping into the race and choosing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.
“My Heart Will Go On” was a major success, featured on Dion’s album “Let’s Talk About Love” and the “Titanic” soundtrack. The song sold 18 million copies and earned Dion an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and several Grammys.
Although Dion, 56, had to cancel several shows in 2023 and 2024 due to an autoimmune disorder, she thrilled fans last month by performing from the Eiffel Tower during the opening of the Paris Olympics.
