Cessna 172 Crash-Lands at Owerri Airport, All Onboard Evacuated Safely

A Cessna 172 light aircraft operated by Skypower Express crash-landed at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri on Tuesday evening, prompting an emergency evacuation of all onboard.

The aircraft, registered 5N‑ASR, was en route from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport when the crew declared an in-flight emergency and diverted to Owerri. The plane reportedly touched down near Runway 17 around 8:00 p.m. local time.

All four passengers and crew survived, with some receiving immediate medical attention. Two were initially unconscious but are now reported to be in stable condition. Emergency responders acted swiftly, ensuring no fatalities or serious injuries.

Authorities confirmed there was no post-crash fire, and airport operations continued without disruption. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

NSIB Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., expressed relief that all onboard were safe and emphasized the bureau’s commitment to a thorough investigation. Technical teams are coordinating the recovery and examination of the aircraft wreckage.
