A deadly cholera outbreak has swept through Niger State, leaving at least 12 people dead and more than 230 others hospitalised across several local government areas (LGAs).

The outbreak, first detected on Sunday in Shiroro Local Government Area, has since spread rapidly. As of Wednesday, cases have been reported in at least six other LGAs, including Minna, Bosso, Magama, Bisa, and Munya.

Healthcare officials confirmed that 239 individuals have been affected and are currently receiving treatment at primary healthcare centres in the impacted areas.

In response to the growing crisis, the state government has set up an isolation centre at the old wing of the Late Sen. Idris Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre in Minna, while a multi-sectoral team has been deployed to curb the spread of the disease.

Dr Ibrahim Dangana, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, assured the public that treatment and isolation centres have been established in the affected LGAs, with ongoing efforts to sensitise the population. “Aggressive sensitisation campaigns are ongoing, targeting religious organisations like the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Islamic groups, as well as the eight emirates in the state,” Dangana said.

The commissioner also commended Governor Mohammed Bago for his swift intervention and the support of donor agencies in managing the outbreak.

Dr Ibrahim Idris, the Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare, highlighted Chanchaga, Minna, Bosso, and Shiroro as the worst-hit areas, urging residents to remain vigilant and adhere to health advisories.

The state’s health authorities continue to battle the spread of the disease, working tirelessly to safeguard the health of residents and prevent further fatalities.
