Coca-Cola Recalls Certain Cans in the UK Over Chlorate Contamination

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners has issued a recall of a limited number of imported cans of Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, Sprite Zero, and Appletiser in the UK. The recall comes after tests overseas detected elevated levels of chlorate, a chemical by-product of chlorine disinfectants.

The recall affects a “small amount” of tall cans that were imported and distributed only to cafés and restaurants during a limited period. Additionally, a small number of imported 6x250ml Appletiser multipacks were sent to supermarkets in the UK.

Batches of Coca-Cola and Sprite were also pulled from shelves in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands after similar findings.

Chlorate is a by-product of chlorine-based sanitisers commonly used to disinfect water. While small amounts are allowed under food safety regulations, excessive levels can interfere with iodine absorption, potentially causing iodine deficiency over time.

The affected cans have production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE, which can be found on the base of the can.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners reassured consumers that the issue is isolated:

“The majority of Coca-Cola products, including standard cans, and all glass and plastic bottles sold in the UK are not impacted.”

“Whilst independent analysis concluded that the likelihood of any associated risk of feeling temporarily unwell from consuming these products is very low, for the reassurance of consumers, we encourage anyone with an affected can to please call our customer service team on 0800 227711.”

The company has been working with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and has apologised for the issue, admitting that “a small number of our products have not met our high standards.”

If you have purchased one of the affected cans, you are advised to check the production code (328 GE – 338 GE) on the bottom of the can and contact Coca-Cola customer service at 0800 227711 for further assistance.

No other Coca-Cola products are impacted by this recall.
