The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is set to make history with its first-ever computer-based version, which will commence on Friday, October 29, 2024. This shift marks a significant leap in the administration of the examination, reflecting the growing emphasis on digital literacy in education across the region.

WAEC, the body responsible for organizing the WASSCE, has spent the past few years preparing for the transition, conducting several pilot programs to ensure a seamless implementation. This move is expected to enhance the efficiency of the examination process, from question distribution to marking, and ultimately reducing the risk of examination malpractice.

In a statement, WAEC’s Head of National Office (HNO) highlighted the importance of aligning with global trends in education, stating, “The computer-based exam will not only test students’ academic knowledge but also their ability to navigate digital platforms, an essential skill in today’s world.”

Over 1.5 million candidates are expected to participate in this year’s exam across the five West African countries. The shift to a digital format is particularly crucial as the region continues to recover from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated the need for technological integration in educational systems.

While the move has been praised by educators and policymakers, some concerns have been raised about the readiness of all schools and students to fully participate, especially in rural areas where access to reliable electricity and internet remains a challenge. WAEC has assured the public that measures are in place to accommodate these students, including the provision of alternative exam centers with necessary facilities.

This digital WASSCE is seen as a watershed moment for education in West Africa, setting the stage for future innovations and reforms in the examination process.
