Côte d’Ivoire Takes Victory at the 2024 ECOWAS Cybersecurity Hackathon

Team ShellxRoot from Côte d’Ivoire has triumphed at the 3rd ECOWAS Regional Cybersecurity Hackathon held in Abuja, Nigeria, claiming the top prize of $10,000 along with advanced digital devices. Their remarkable technical skills and innovative solutions set them apart.

In second place, Team M3V7R from Benin Republic took home $8,000, while Nigeria’s Team Error secured third with a prize of $6,000.

The event highlighted the commitment of ECOWAS and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to nurturing young cybersecurity talent in the region. During the closing ceremony, Kashifu Inuwa, NITDA’s Director General, represented by Oladejo Olawumi, emphasized the importance of empowering youth to tackle escalating cyber threats. He stated, “We must harness the energy of young people, directing it towards cybersecurity to keep them engaged in constructive activities and away from crime.”

The Hackathon was a collaborative effort involving ECOWAS, NITDA, various governments, private sector organizations, and academic institutions, all aiming to combat the rising tide of cross-border cybercrime.

Sediko Douka, ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalisation, representing ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, spoke on the event’s significance in empowering young talent. “This Hackathon serves as a platform for skill development and supports youth in the digital age. By enhancing our cyber workforce, we improve regional security and stability in an ever-evolving cyber landscape.”

Douka also encouraged participants, noting that their experiences not only deepened their understanding of current cybersecurity challenges but also offered valuable hands-on skill development. “This competition reflects ECOWAS’s vision of creating a robust and resilient cyberspace, aligning with global efforts to protect digital assets,” he added.

He highlighted new regulations adopted by the African Union and ECOWAS to ensure high cybersecurity standards across member states, urging nations to implement these measures.

A standout moment of the event was the recognition of Hannah Bangoura from Sierra Leone, who received the Best Female Participant award, showcasing the increasing role of women in West Africa’s cybersecurity sector.
