The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has outlined key priorities for Nigeria’s newly appointed petroleum regulators, urging them to focus on domestic refining expansion and increased oil and gas output to strengthen the country’s energy security.
Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of CPPE, said the appointments of Engr. Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan as Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) provide a “strategic opportunity” to reset regulatory direction in line with national economic goals.
CPPE called for policies that reduce dependence on fuel imports by supporting local refineries through targeted incentives and regulatory alignment that encourages domestic production. It added that boosting refining capacity would cut foreign-exchange pressure and create jobs.
On crude production, the group urged the new NUPRC leadership to attract fresh investments, enhance operational security, and work towards raising national output to at least two million barrels per day, while strengthening gas development and supply commitments to local industries.
