In a major push towards clean energy, the Dangote Group has invested over $280 million in compressed natural gas (CNG) technology and infrastructure. The investment is part of the company’s commitment to support President Bola Tinubu’s CNG initiative, aimed at advancing Nigeria’s energy independence and lowering carbon emissions.
In a statement released on Sunday, Dangote Group highlighted that this substantial investment not only underscores its leadership in Nigeria’s CNG sector but also aligns with global efforts to mitigate climate change. “This move marks a significant milestone in Dangote’s clean energy transition, with plans to operate most of its fleet on CNG by mid-2026,” said Arvind Pathak, Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc.
Dangote’s commitment aligns with President Tinubu’s strategy of using gas as Nigeria’s transition fuel. Tinubu recently introduced measures to boost CNG adoption, including the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles that transport people, food, and goods. These initiatives are designed to foster a more conducive environment for private-sector investment in CNG, supporting both energy efficiency and economic growth.
To support its transition, Dangote Cement has begun replacing its fleet with CNG-powered vehicles, starting with an initial delivery of 1,500 mono-fuel CNG trucks and an expected total of 3,100 by the year’s end. “Our aim is to have a fleet predominantly powered by CNG by mid-2026,” Pathak noted, adding that the company is also investing in CNG fueling infrastructure to ensure reliable access for its vehicles.
The group’s dedication to expanding CNG access has already led to the development of a fueling station at its Obajana plant, capable of refueling over 3,000 trucks. A second station is being constructed in Ibese to further support its growing fleet. Pathak emphasized that the company is committed to an aggressive deployment timeline, with full compliance expected by 2026.
Aliko Dangote, President and CEO of the Dangote Group, stated that the company’s investment supports Nigeria’s climate goals under the Paris Agreement, which targets net-zero emissions by 2060. “In this transition to clean energy, we are optimistic about a remarkable accomplishment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, as he steers the nation towards energy efficiency. This private-sector intervention underlines our commitment to a cleaner, greener future,” he said.
The Dangote Group’s early adoption of CNG has made it the largest operator of CNG trucks in Nigeria, underscoring its role in helping Nigeria achieve energy independence and sustainable growth. This initiative, launched under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, positions Dangote Group as a pivotal partner in Nigeria’s pursuit of a more secure energy future.
